18th April 2011 Notes: Our 2nd Picture of Comet Elenin

Despite the effect of the Moon, we thought today we would try and get another picture of comet Elenin which is still way out beyond the orbit of Mars. We were concerned by the effect the Moon would have on the picture, which we were right to be concerned as you can see below the picture was not so hot.

However, there is no shadow of the doubt that comet Elenin is indeed in the picture below. If it hasn’t already leapt out at you from the picture and yelled out  “Here I am….”, then just look right of centre.

We added a processed view of the shot which you see on the right of the picture below which shows the difference between comet Elenin and the background stars around it.

It may be our imagination but it looks like Elenin may already be turning on a greenish appearance as you would expect to see from a comet.

  1. Hi

    Great photo!

Just curious though; I was wondering what the black starless circles are at 12:30, 3:30 (very faintly though), 6:30 and 9:30 in the left hand image.

  2. Yes…we saw those black circles too…… Have not been able to explain them.

  3. Thanks for that 🙂
