8th April 2011 Notes: When Best to See Comet Elenin

Our research shows that Comet Elenin will be at it’s brightest on September 19,2011 with a magnitude of +3.77. To see a comet with the naked eye and no telescope or binoculars, the comet will need to be less than a magnitude of +6.0. We worked out that you should be able to see Elenin with just your eyes from August 27 through to October 29. We will of course check our figures as the comet draws closer. With a telescope you should see comet Elenin from August through to the end of December.

But will we see the comet from Sydney? These are the following times for when Elenin sets   (Sydney NSW time)

August 1   Sets 8:40pm

September 1 Sets 8:06pm

October 1 Rises 5:18am   Sets Before Sunset

November 1 Rises 10:39pm   Sets 7:32am

December 1 Rises 5:49pm   Sets 3:39 am

So the good news is yes we will see it from Sydney.
