6th April 2011 Notes: Our Search For Comet Elenin… a closer look….

With the picture below, the image on the left is a zoomed in shot of what we believe to be Comet Elenin. The object in the centre of the picture has a fuzzy “comet” appearance to it with a lot of noise around the object and is completely different to the surrounding stars which are more circular and do not have any noise around them. We have discounted any nebula or galaxies or other objects in this area .

In the image on the right, we processed the image to try and bring out some more detail to the object and you can see that it has a different appearance to the stars on the left and right hand side of the image.

Normally the comets would appear green in color… however Elenin is still a long way from Earth and we only took a 5 minute exposure with the telescope which was probably not long enough to catch the object’s true color yet.

We will continue to search for Elenin when we next reserve time on the telescope.
