The Universe Today : The Black-eye Galaxy M64

We modified today’s telescope image of the Black-eye galaxy to bring out a more interesting picture of  the galaxy.

The stars and gas in this galaxy actually spin clockwise and anti-clockwise at the same time…… suggesting that this galaxy is actually two galaxies which have collided together to form a new galaxy.

As a result of this collision of 2 galaxies, you can see in our picture below the ridge on the top left of the nucleus . This dark ridge of gas is what gave this galaxy it’s name of Black-eye.
