The Whale Galaxy – 16th November 2010

The Whale Galaxy, also known as NGC 4631, is a galaxy seen edge on from the Earth.

This galaxy has a shape which indicates that it has had a close encounter with two other galaxies in the past. One of these other galaxies can be seen above the Whale Galaxy while the other galaxy is in the area lower left of the picture but not seen in the picture.

As you can see, there is no mistaking the reason why this star forming galaxy was called the Whale Galaxy. We enhanced the picture slightly to better show the rich star forming regions in the galaxy which are shown in white.
