NGC 55 : Sep 15th 2010

The sky conditions today were not very good so the picture shown in today’s post is showing some of the effect of the poor atmosphere. However, in the picture below of the spiral galaxy NGC 55 we have enhanced the image (on the left of the picture) taken from the telescope and tried to remove some of the poor qualities of the picture.

When this picture was snapped, NGC 55 was at RA/DEC 0h15m 9s   and  39° 13′ 24″  located in the Constellation Sculptor.

Neither this galaxy nor NGC 300 are part of the Sculptor group of galaxies. They were originally thought to belong to the group, however NGC 55 and NGC 300 have now been found to be a lot closer to us and are gravitationally bound to each other.

When you look at the picture below, NGC 55 does not look like a spiral galaxy. This is because we are looking at the galaxy almost side on.
