The Andromeda Galaxy : Sep 4th 2010

The Andromeda Galaxy is a galaxy like our own Milky Way Galaxy …… however it is twice the size of the Milky Way.

Every day the Andromeda is moving closer to our own galaxy, travelling towards us at a speed of around 43,000 kilometres a day. It is expected to collide with us in about 3 billion years time. Galaxies colliding together is a common event and is a process key in how galaxies evolve over time.

When the picture below was taken last night, there was still a fair amount of haze in the atmosphere. This is seen in the image shown on the left hand side of the picture below. We did a little bit of processing to get rid of the haze and the result is shown in the right hand side of the image.

You will see in the picture of the 2 other  satellite galaxies M110 and M32.
