Processing Images – Saturn Nebula NGC 7009 (Part 1 of 2)

The Saturn Nebula is another interesting nebula visible from Sydney and is the latest target of our image processing.

The 3 exposures below are using the following filters:

F658N Filter (red) on the left,   F656N Filter (Blue) in the middle , and the F502N (Green) Filter on the right.

This should be an interesting nebula to process and when looking at the exposures, it appears that there is more data picked up using the blue and green filters and less picked up with the red filter.

The Saturn Nebula is a very complex nebula and when we process the exposures we are looking at highlighting features such as the jet-like streams and interesting colors this nebula is showing.

Interesting enough astronomers do not know how far away the Saturn Nebula is from Earth as there are no reference stars near the nebula in which to calculate it’s distance.
