What Happened to Voyager 2?

The Voyager 2 spacecraft was launched in August 1977 and in it’s time it has become the only spacecraft to pass by all 5 outer planets…. namely Jupiter,Saturn,Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. And in the last 33 years it has been sending signals back to Earth of it’s progress without any problems…..

Voyager 2

But then something happened last month. For some reason the signals were still coming through but were apparently in a different and unknown language. This of course led to people speculating that Voyager 2 had been hijacked by aliens and had been reprogrammed with an new alien language.

But that was not the case and Voyager 2 is once again transmitting in Earth language. But what happened?

It is most likely that a cosmic ray had somehow bypassed the radiation shield surrounding Voyager 2 and effected a small bit of memory on the spacecraft computer. Bits normally contain a zero or a one and apparently instead of showing zero…. it flipped and showed one instead. This resulted in alien language being sent back to earth as we had zeros insteadof one’s and vice versa. Systems on the spacecraft were reset and the problem was fixed.

But there is still a problem. during the downtime the clock is now wrong. but don’t worry….in the next 2 weeks this will be fixed as well. I wonder what time zone space craft use?

Edit : as per Chris’s comment……. Voyager 2 never passed Pluto. I got my spacecraft mixed up and was thinking of the New Horizons mission which will pass by Pluto in 4 years time.

One Response to “What Happened to Voyager 2?”

  1. Actually, Voyager 2 never went by Pluto. Neither did Voyager 1. But it did go by the four outermost planets as per today’s definition of a planet :).
