Where are the Asteroids Now?

I thought it would be interesting to have a look at where all the asteroids are that have been mentioned in Sydney Asteroid Watch. I have started adding new posts into Asteroid Watch today with a number of interesting asteroids coming up in the next few month.

If you look at the picture on the left, you will see that the majority of the asteroids are still in a fairly large group surrounding the Earth. Of course the majority of these asteroids are now millions of kilometres away from Earth now.

I was interested in one asteroid called 2009 WJ6 which passed by the Earth 59 days ago. It looks like it is really speeding along now and is well ahead of the Earth in it’s orbit around the sun. I had a look at the asteroid and it appears to be around 286.6 million kilometres from Earth, a vast distance to travel in just a short two months.

If you look on the other side of the Sun from Earth, you will see the asteroid apophis which is the asteroid which has made the news often in the last few months.

If you have not looked at Sydney Asteroid Watch yet, you can see our posts there at  http://sydneyasteroidwatch.wordpress.com/
