Return of the Clouds

After Sydney has experienced a hot and sunny day today it is diffacult to believe the sticky post at the top of the page which states that for the 3rd of November 2009 there will be 100% cloud cover over Sydney for the rest of the night.

To try and work out why this could be the case, I checked the online radar and cloud maps and saw at 5pm that indeed a huge bank of clouds was heading up the coast and was almost upon Sydney.

This seems to be a common problem for amateur astronomers here in Sydney and one that will hopefully go away in the not too distant future. As I write this I notice the Sun just disappearing behind a small cloud.

Over the last few months I wonder which of these two conditions are the rarest.

1… Suitable Observing nights in Sydney

or

2… Frequent sunspots on the Sun

I think the sunspots are only just ahead.
