Mars in the Early Morning

Today I decided to wake up early and attempt to take some pictures of Mars through the telescope. I started setting up the scope but I had misjudged twilight this morning and was already beginning to lose Mars.

Mars was 32 degrees above the horizon and fading fast and I knew that by the time I connected the camera to the scope and had everything focused, it would be next to impossible to take an interesting picture.

So I decided to settle for a picture using a 7.2 megapixel digital camera, pointed it at the sky and took a series of pictures…. one of which I  include in this post.

Mars is now starting to get to the stage where it will become more interesting to view through backyard telescopes. It will probably be at least another 4 weeks before Mars gets close enough to Earth to become really interesting in telescopes. Mars of course will be at it’s closest to Earth on January 27, 2010 so mark this date in your calendar if you are keen on looking at Mars.
